Woodworm is a common name for a number of wood boring beetles. None are worms!

Common Furniture Beetle (Anobium Punctatum) cause about 75% of case usually seen as  up to a 2 mm hole in timber. Adults lay 30 to 40 eggs in timber at a time. Active in spring and Summer.

Death Watch Beetle (Xestobium Rufovillosum) Usually found in old buildings like churches. Signs are a much bigger hole 3-4 mm 

Woodboring Weevil (Euophryum confine) Often found in damp and decaying wood. Small 1 mm holes

House Longhorn Beetle. Mainly found in the London area. Oval shaped 9 x 6 mm holes

The Adults are active in spring and summer laying eggs in the timber before the larvae hatch and bore into the timber often for upto 4 years before they re appear making a hole in the surface. The cycle then starts again!
